Reversible Bucket Hat Sew and Tell

The Reversible Bucket Hat from Oliver + S is the first hat project I've ever done.  The pattern and the steps were easy to follow, and the illustrations were very helpful.  This is a free pattern on the website, but it is also included in their book Little Things to Sew.  I've been looking at a few other patterns on the website, and if the directions are as clear as this pattern was, I'll be really looking forward to making those outfits.

One of the great things about this hat is that it is machine washable.  The interfacing does give the brim some shape, but it's not so stiff that it'd be messed up after a run through the washing machine.

You can also play around with what fabric to use.  I'll definitely be making this hat again, and I think that I will use flannel for one side of the hat.  If you use laminated fabric it'd be great for the rain.  You can even sew up some scraps together and use it to make a patchwork hat.

All the steps for this project were easy, and it was fun seeing the hat take shape.  Most of the sewing is pretty basic, but I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner, because you have to negotiate through all those curves.  With some patterns messing up the curves wouldn't matter.  But because this is going to be worn by someone, unless the wearer has a misshapen head, it'd be better to have some experience, one or two projects, with sewing curves.

If you're the type that likes to have your kid have coordinated accessories for their outfits, just add a little extra fabric to  your cutting order and then make this hat.  You'll have a perfectly posh child that'll make even Suri jealous!
